Connecting Roots In African American Genealogy
Congress established the Freedmen’s Bureau to help former slaves freed in the Civil War. The Bureau provided food, education, and housing, as well as medical care.
Today, the Freedmen’s Bureau Project helps African Americans connect with their Civil War ancestors. The project includes FamilySearch International and the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).
Also included is the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, as well as Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS), and the California African American Museum.
Because of their hard work, the names of nearly two million men, women, and children, are now searchable online.
The Freedmen’s Bureau Project changed genealogy for African Americans. And the documentary “Connecting Roots” explains the history behind this project. Also included in the program are the personal stories of families, which shows why this is so meaningful.
