Safe in 60: Preventing car burglaries

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Have you ever had your car broken into? Then you know what a hassle it can be.

Twelve people a day have their car broken into in Salt Lake City. That’s almost 4,500 a year.

If you don’t want this to happen to you, the most important thing for you to do is to lock those doors.

The first thing a thief checks is whether the door is open, and the second, if there is something inside worth stealing.

And something we’re all guilty of, including myself: leaving valuables sitting out in the open.

Believe it or not, a clean car is less likely to be broken into because thieves can’t see anything to steal.

If you are going to conceal some items in your trunk, do it before you park. They might be watching you.

Don’t use a hide-a-key. Thieves know how to find them.

Park in an area with good lighting and a lot of people around.

And if you see somebody checking doors or scoping out cars in a parking lot, call your local police department.
