Safe in 60: Determining right of way at a 4 way stop
Jun 18, 2018, 10:06 AM
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — For many of us, four way stops can be frustrating and sometimes confusing. Here’s a quick review of how to proceed when you encounter one:
- The right of way is given to the vehicle arriving at the intersection first.
- If two vehicles arrive at the same time, the driver on the left has to yield to the driver on the right. A good way to remember is that they have the ‘right’ of way.
- If two vehicles arrive opposite each other and both are going straight, both vehicles can go simultaneously.
- If two vehicles arrive at the same time opposite each other, but one is turning left, that vehicle has to yield right of way to the one going straight. Remember: the vehicle turning left ALWAYS has to yield.
- Stay behind the stop line. If there isn’t a stop line, make sure and stop behind the crosswalk lines. Always allow room for pedestrians to cross.
- And remember, vehicles must always yield to pedestrians entering an intersection whether marked with a crosswalk or not
