Safe in 60: National Night Out Against Crime

Jul 30, 2018, 7:00 AM | Updated: 11:07 am

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — The first Tuesday in August is a busy one for police and their communities. This year will mark the 35th annual National Night Out Against Crime.

On Tuesday, August 7, police officers, firefighters and their communities will get together for block parties, festivals, parades, youth events and safety demonstrations.

If you have wanted to be more involved in your community, this is the perfect time to get started.

Communities that have neighbors who look out for each other generally have lower crime. During National Night Out events, you can get to know your neighbors and the police that patrol your neighborhoods.

National Night Out is a perfect opportunity to organize a neighborhood watch group; to learn how to spot and report criminal activity; to learn how to become involved as a volunteer with your local police department; and a chance to talk with an officer face-to-face to ask any questions you may have about law enforcement.

It’s also a fun night for the whole family. Many events involve kids’ parades, bike rodeos and safety demonstrations with police and fire personnel.

If you’d like to organize a National Night Out, register with the national website. Registration is free.

Then, contact your police department and see if they will send an officer to attend. Your local public safety personnel will do all they can to attend your event.

This year, 38 million neighbors and 16,000 communities are expected to take part in the National Night Out.

If you don’t want to organize or attend an event, you can still use National Night Out as a chance to pick a safety subject and educate your children on how to be more safe in the community.
