Safe in 60: Sex Assault Awareness Month

Apr 8, 2019, 10:12 AM | Updated: 10:13 am

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Rape and sexual assault have a lasting effect on victims. Yet they still remain the most under reported crimes.

As April is the 18th annual Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, it’s a good time to raise awareness about this very tough subject.

According to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in five women and one in 38 men will be raped during their lifetime. For many victims, that will happen between the ages of 11-17. These are staggering and unacceptable statistics.

Although there is no way to completely eliminate the possibility that something might happen, there are strategies to help reduce the risk.

Don’t be afraid to say no to any uncomfortable situation. Don’t worry about being polite. If it doesn’t feel right, leave immediately.

Talk to your children about the dangers of sexual assault. Make sure they know about consent, when to speak up and how to listen to their instincts.

Be involved with your child – know their friends and let them know they can talk to you about anything without fear of getting in trouble. Watch for any behavioral, physical or verbal changes with your child.

Most importantly, if you are a victim of sexual assault – remember it is not your fault.

Please report it immediately. Your voice could help prevent future victims.

There are resources to help, including victim advocates who will be with you throughout the court process for support.
