High 5: Beating the Odds With Adult Literacy

“What are you interested in? What do you want to know about?”
In learning to read, the students enrolled in the Literacy Action Center’s adult literacy program also learn about other topics with Dr. Deborah Young.
She has been teaching adult literacy for 35 years, taking adults with low-level reading, writing or math skills and improving them.
Volunteers Donna Mirabelli and her sister wrote into KSL TV to nominate Dr. Young for a High 5.
“Donna was kind enough to share with us your dedication and hard work to these students. And I can tell they agree!”
Some even speaking out to share just how much they appreciate her.
“I know of two people right now that are like my favorite teachers: one of my teachers from middle school and Deborah.”
So what motivates her?
“Seeing the change, the thrill of knowing somebody is different because they walked through the door. They’ve got something they can talk about at night because they know something they didn’t know that morning.”
From her students to her volunteers, Dr. Young inspires.
“There isn’t anything this woman cannot do. I mean she teaches, she writes grants, she administrates, she puts together fundraisers.”
And we are grateful to have her in our community.
