What’s the trick to perfectly sliced veggies every time? You might be surprised to find that a Mandoline is a tool that you can use for way more than just cutting up french fries.
Heather Smith and Candace Heward share how to use the under-utilized mandoline for slicing veggies perfectly.
Here are 3 important things to know about mandoline slicers
1. Types of Slices Your Mandoline Can Do
Depending on the attachments and configuration, your Mandoline is a pretty versatile little kitchen utensil. Each slice is pretty incredible. The types of slices a mandoline can perform start with normal slices, but of any thickness, you would like. The adjustability of these little devices is massive. You can also do crinkle-cut which is great for making ridged potato chips. You can do a waffle cut, which can be great for thick fries. You can also do julienne which is great for slicing little strips of carrots for your salads. And finally, you can do matchstick slices that are similar to julienne, just shorter and skinnier.
2. Always Use Caution When Using A Mandoline
Always use the provided hand/finger guard with these devices. You might also consider a pair of cut-resistant gloves if you are trying to make the last few slices. Just always be aware of fingers. The last thing you want is an emergency room visit instead of being able to enjoy dinner. One last thing on safety: make sure this is stored in an area where little kids (or sometimes adults alike) won’t be able to get to it easily, and reach in and slice themselves. When cleaning, check what your mandoline says because it may be dishwasher safe. This will make cleaning these devices a breeze. But if you have to wash it by hand, make sure you pay attention to the safety info listed above.
3. Have Fun With It
A mandoline really can help simplify and speed up the slicing process in the kitchen, just be careful while you use it and you will be able to efficiently get your meals together thanks to this simple little device! To buy a top-quality mandoline or for more kitchen inspiration visit www.gygi.com.
