HIGH 5: Cheer coach’s guidance goes beyond stunts and dance moves

WEST JORDAN, Utah – It’s time for some much-needed cheer, and today we’re introducing you to one woman who saw an opportunity to start a cheer program with some of the sweetest students in West Jordan.

Before schools let out and social distancing had become widespread, news specialist Jenne Anderson headed to South Valley School to meet a cheer coach who made a difference in the lives of her squad.

The South Valley Cheer Squad is loud and proud and can cheer to any crowd. They’re a team that’s sure to warm your heart and make you smile.

“This is a school for students throughout all of Jordan School District who are ages 18 – 22,” said Principal Rita Bouillon. “Some work on getting a high school diploma, and some just work on learning jobs and learning how to access the community so they can be an independent member of society.”

The cheer team kicked off last June when Coach Ulbby Dyson approached Bouillon with an idea.

“She said, ‘Hey, I wondered if I could talk to you about having a cheer program here,'” Bouillon said. “I was like, ‘Yeah! Let’s do it!'”

Because of Coach Ulbby’s idea, around 30 South Valley Students come together every Wednesday afternoon to practice their new skills.

“I like doing the stunts,” said student Afton Perez.

“It’s, like, hard,” student Michaela Pheil said. “But it’s really easy after the teacher explains it.”

Ever since Coach Ulbby introduced the program, Bouillon said she’s seeing some awesome changes in each of the cheerleaders. Not just on the mat, but in the classroom as well.

“They’re following directions, they’re getting in order, they’re doing this 5, 6, 7, 8, and leading the cheers,” she said. “(Coach Ulbby) has some kids leading the cheers, who I think are quite shy.”

It’s why Coach Ulbby was nominated for a KSL High 5.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” she said. “They work so hard every day once a week. It’s been so awesome to be able to come in, and Rita, the principal at the school, was so welcoming about this idea. It’s been great.”

Bouillon wasn’t the only one who’s welcomed Coach Ulbby with open arms.

“(She’s) pretty cool,” said student Mickelly Johnson.

“And she’ll help you out if you need help with anything,” Pheil added.
