SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the Salt Lake City-County Building calling for police reform and de-escalation training.
“Whose streets? Our streets!” protesters chanted at Wednesday’s 6 a.m. rally organized by Black Lives Matter Utah.
Some protesters took part for the first time as Black Lives Matter members.
“I think Lex is really focused on elevating black voices in Utah, she has done an amazing job and I think her focus on keeping things peaceful really elevates her message,” said one protester, referring to Lex Scott, founder of Black Lives Matter Utah.
Black, brown, white, young and old, they called out the names of those who lost their lives at the hands of law enforcement.
“Say his name. George Floyd. What’s his name? George Floyd,” protesters chanted.
Latinos, Pacific Islanders and indigenous community members all made their voices heard.
One protester told the crowd, “So all of you feeling like you’re nothing, you are something and you matter!”
Sen. Luz Escamilla and other state leaders demanded action.
“Every life matters, but right now, black lives matter,” Escamilla said.
When it was over organizers reminded the crowd, “We’ve got to tote!” to create change.
