SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Accidents at railroad crossings almost always result in severe injury or death.
That’s why officials and railroad companies focus on safety every fall.
A motorist is 20 times more likely to be killed in a collision with a train than they would in a crash with another vehicle. That’s why it is so important to follow the rules.
The most common collisions happen when drivers or pedestrians choose to go around a safety barrier or when someone tries to race across the track in front of an oncoming train.
It can take a train up to a mile to stop – so don’t risk it.
Only cross at designated crossings and never ignore lowered gates or flashing lights.
Trains hang at least three feet over the tracks, so make sure you allow yourself or your vehicle enough room.
Always pay attention to railroad crossing signs. Avoid distractions like your phone or headphones.
Don’t be tempted to walk on or along railroad tracks, even if it is a short cut.
Walking on, near, or along railroad tracks is also considered trespassing.
