Man In Critical Condition Following Explosion In South Jordan Home

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah — A man was listed in critical condition following an explosion inside a South Jordan home, the same home that police found packed with explosive materials in July.

Crews from the South Jordan Fire Department and South Jordan Police Department responded to 3371 Snow Moon Place around 4 p.m. Saturday.

When they arrived on scene, they found an adult male with lower leg injuries.

Officials said the man was transported by AirMed medical helicopter to the University of Utah Medical Center in critical condition.

Neighbors told KSL they were shaken up that night, wondering if it was safe for their children to be outside while Trick-or-Treating.

“Kids run around here every night,” said Cory Monty. “It’s scary. (My) wife’s really upset.”

The South Jordan neighborhood had another thing to be weary of this Halloween.

“If they didn’t get all of it, and they’re saying that it’s minimal that will do all that damage, what are we doing with here?” said Monty.

The homes on Snow Moon Place shook for the second time in three months.

“When it originally happened, they said there was enough in there to level this place pretty well — the neighborhood to the Walmart, you know,” said Monty.

He and his family heard the explosion down the street.

“(We came) running out to a plummet of smoke coming from the basement,” he said. “I just stuck a hose in the basement and cranked the hose on and ran away from it.”

Monty and his neighbor then heard a man calling for help.

“”Help me, my feet are gone,'” he said. “It was a little bit terrifying when you can see his face screaming for help.”

Monty said the man was trapped in the basement.

“He said, ‘Don’t come in here,'” said Monty.

They yelled for him to crawl towards the garage.

In July, officers from the South Jordan Police Department found the home packed with highly volatile explosives, prompting the evacuation of 600 residents.

“With the past, I didn’t know what was going on, what was in the house, or what not,” said Monty.

The 42-year-old homeowner, Ryan McManigal, was arrested. His home has been boarded up for months, but Monty said the victim showed up four days ago to do work on the home.

“It may be his cousin,” said Monty.

Three homes were evacuated as officials planned a second look inside to determine the cause.

“We have all of our firefighters and explosive experts on scene to make sure we don’t have any other further incidents,” said Deputy Chief Ryan Lessner with the South Jordan Fire Department.

Monty said he was concerned that the house still held some deadly surprises.

“As a community, we have got to get it demoed and have a new one built, especially when we don’t know what’s in there,” he said.

McManigal faced several charges, including attempted aggravated murder and weapons charges. He remained in custody in the Salt Lake County Jail, with his next court appearance scheduled for Nov. 18.
