Safe In 60: Winterize Your Car Before Winter Weather Hits
Nov 2, 2020, 6:33 AM
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Having car trouble is never fun, but having it happen during the cold winter months can be dangerous.
Drivers should get their vehicles checked now – before the winter weather hits.
It won’t be long before sidewalk shoveling and window scraping become a part of your daily routine. Here are a few things to prepare before you start driving during those winter conditions.
- Cold weather puts a strain on your batteries, so check the health of your battery and replace it if you need to. While you’re at it, also check your battery for corrosion and build-up.
- Always keep a set of jumper cables in your car.
- Check your tires for good tread, and make sure they’re inflated properly. Cold weather deflates tires, so make sure to check the pressure regularly.
- Check your fluids and make sure the antifreeze in your car is rated for winter weather.
- Use wiper fluid that is made especially for winter. It is less likely to freeze when sprayed on the windshield.
- Don’t forget to find your ice scraper. You don’t want that first storm to come and be unprepared.
Winterizing your vehicle can be a hassle and cost money. However, the time you spend could save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars by not becoming stranded or getting into a traffic accident.
