Safe In 60: Practice Safe Habits To Prevent Fires In The Home During Winter

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – House fires and carbon monoxide poisoning are more common during the winter months.
As the weather gets colder, it’s important to take steps to keep your home safe.
Everyone should practice safe habits to prevent fires in the home. If you find yourself surprised by a fire, there are three things you can do to help lower the chance of injury to you or your family.
First, smoke alarms are critical.
They should be installed near every sleeping area and on each level of your home. Test them monthly and change the batteries at least once a year. Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years.
Second, have a fire extinguisher handy.
About half of all house fires start in the kitchen, so have a fire extinguisher nearby. Everyone in your home should know how to use them.
Third, have an escape plan.
An escape plan should include two ways out of each room. Teach everyone to stay low and designate a meeting place outside the home.
Practice your escape plan with your family twice a year. You should be able to get everyone out of the house in two minutes or less.
