Safe In 60: Keeping Young Children Safe From Hidden Window Hazards

May 10, 2021, 5:00 AM | Updated: 6:40 am

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – There are many things we think of in our homes that can be a danger to our children. But do you think about windows as one of those hazards?

According to the National Safety Council, falls from windows are more common than you may think. Each year, more than 3,300 children are injured from falling from windows.

Preschool-aged children are at the highest risk, accounting for two-thirds of window falls. Screens are not strong enough to hold the weight of even a small child.

Here are some steps to keep children safe around windows:

  • Keep windows closed and locked, or use a latch or wedge to keep the window from opening more than four inches. Make sure it is something an adult can remove if there is an emergency and the window needs to be opened.
  • Consider installing window guards. Like baby gates, they can be put in an open window to prevent a child from falling.
  • Keep furniture away from the window to prevent children from climbing to reach it.
  • If you have blinds, don’t forget to secure the cords out of your child’s reach.

When protecting your child from potential dangers in the home, don’t forget your windows.
