TOOELE, Utah — A groundbreaking ceremony was held in Tooele for the Deseret Peak Utah Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Around 200 people gathered at the site Saturday morning, including Church leaders and invited guests.

Church President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to build the Deseret Peak Temple in the April 2019 General Conference.

It was originally called the Tooele Valley Utah Temple, but was renamed the Deseret Peak Utah Temple on Jan. 19, 2021.

Officials said the three-story temple will be constructed at 2400 North and 400 West in Tooele, about 30 minutes southwest of Salt Lake City.

The building was estimated at approximately 70,000 square feet.

It will be the first temple in Tooele County and the 27th temple in the state of Utah.

Additional temples which have been announced or are under construction are located in Ephraim, Layton, Lindon, Orem, St. George (Red Cliffs), Saratoga Springs, Smithfield, Syracuse and Taylorsville.

Other temple sites in use or under renovation include Bountiful, Brigham City, Cedar City, Draper, Jordan River, Logan, Manti, Monticello, Mount Timpanogos, Ogden, Oquirrh Mountain, Payson, Provo City Center, Provo, Salt Lake, Saratoga Springs, and St. George.
