Utahns ‘Dive’ For Cover As SLC Airport Hits Early 100 Degree Record

Jun 4, 2021, 11:10 PM | Updated: Jun 5, 2021, 2:16 pm

SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah — Several temperature records fell Friday as the Salt Lake City airport saw its earliest 100-degree day ever.

The previous record high at the airport on June 4 was 98 degrees and was set back in 2012, according to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City.

Downtown Salt Lake City also set a new all-time high for the date at 96, eclipsing a 95 in 2012. The temperature on the BYU campus in Provo reached 99, surpassing a 96 recorded in 2018. Tooele set a new high as well at 97, beating the old record of 95 from 2018.

Several areas of Utah had been under excessive heat warnings heading into the day.

At Salt Lake County’s Draper Recreation Center, dozens of people attempted to beat the heat at an outdoor pool Friday afternoon.

“Oh, it’s super hot!” Alex Floyd exclaimed.

Program coordinator Jake Peterson said crowds had largely come back since COVID-19 pandemic restrictions were lifted.

He believed the temperatures contributed to the larger numbers on hand Friday.

“I think that’s crazy!” Peterson said of the record temperatures. “I think that’s why we’re seeing so many of our people here at our pools because it definitely feels hot and we’re happy to have them!”

Liz Sollis, associate division director over community engagement with Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation, said workers at all the county’s properties were encouraging visitors to come hydrated and be prepared with water and sun screen and to know their limits in the sun and high temperatures.

Sollis also recommended people visit the county’s recreation centers and ice rinks to beat the heat.

“We’ve got a lot of options!” she said.

Summer Work

Sollis did note that though the crowds were already returning from the pandemic, workers were not necessarily. Several of the county properties, including outdoor pools and parks, were still seeking employees.

“We definitely need to make sure we have the right ratio of lifeguards per individuals in the pool and things like that,” Sollis said. “Definitely we’re looking for people who like those specialty tasks if you want to come and be part of our team.”
