Customers, Friends Raise Money For Millcreek Businesses Lost In Fire

MILLCREEK, Utah — A handful of small businesses in Millcreek remain fenced off after a massive fire tore through the area two months ago, causing upwards of $20 million in damage.

Loyal customers and friends held a benefit concert Monday night in hopes of raising money to help some of those business owners.

“Best case scenario will maybe be a year,” said Kenny You.

Kenny’s father owns Tokai Sushi, a popular restaurant, which has thrived for the last 12 years – even during 2020, when loyal customers ordered take-out to keep the restaurant in business.

Now, they’re looking at an unknown future.

“We’re just kind of in a panic, like, what are we gonna do to fix the building to start back up?” said You.

Pegsoon Whang, a cellist for the Utah Symphony and Opera, has been a loyal customer to Jung’s Alterations for a decade.

She said she can’t imagine the toll this fire has taken on her friend, so she decided to help.

“As a musician, there’s not always something I can do,” explained Whang. “So, I asked some of my colleagues if they would be willing to play for a fundraiser, and of course, they said yes.”

Nearly 100 people showed up to listen to world-class musicians and to help their friends, who are still facing the burn from the fire.

The owner of the strip mall has insurance, which will cover building damage, but the business owners will be responsible for what’s inside.

Some of them have insurance, KSL-TV has learned, but others do not.

For the Yous, the community support has been invaluable.

“The money’s great, but it’s just the people cheering us on, so we’re not just six businesses trying to root each other on,” said Kenny.
