How a Utah recovery center is innovating treatment for substance abuse

A Utah recovery center owner is redefining how others find recovery after he struggled to live a substance-free lifestyle for years.

Jordan Burningham, who was once addicted to heroin and struggling to stay sober, is in charge of one of the leading innovative recovery centers in Utah. He’s currently 6 years sober himself and through his experiences, he’s able to help others live healthier substance-free lives.

Through recovery, Jordan, the Owner and Executive Director of Diamond Tree Recovery, has found a passion in helping others find sobriety by redefining what a recovery center looks like.

“We really are trying to change this industry to be more evidence-based on some new innovative things,” Jordan said.

For him and his team, that meant creating a four-pillar system that consisted of reshaping one’s spiritual, mental, physical, and social approaches towards life. In addition to focusing on the four pillars, it was paramount that the patients were comfortable with staying at the treatment center according to Jordan.

“When I came into it, I really wanted the residential rehabilitation because I think that’s huge. People need new healthy habits and a controlled environment to get away from all of the stuff that got them to where they were,” he said.

Redefining the rehabilitation and recovery process

Aside from the residential aspect of recovery, a key focus for Jordan was to incorporate a healthy approach towards patient detox.

“There wasn’t really anybody doing detox that really got people off of the chemical dependencies. It was just, switch it to a different addiction that is legal and prescribed,” he described. “I wanted people to have the option to truly remove chemical dependency.”

The key component that can help lead to removing that dependency, according to Jordan, is developing better nutritional habits, mindfulness, and even DNA testing that can be used to detect genetic contributors that may lead to addictive behaviors.

Even though the technology used to help promote a successful road to recovery is evolving, Jordan believes that it’s important to understand the personalized approach required during treatment.

“We’re trying to address [all of the factors that lead to addiction] and have twelve steps and other modalities available because there is no one way [to recovery] for everyone,” he said.
