Wednesday’s Child: Trio of siblings hope to stay together with new family

WEST JORDAN, Utah –- It’s been almost three years since siblings Mary, who is 16, Isaiah, 11, and Elias, 10, entered foster care in Utah.

“It’s been hard for my caseworker to find placements for all of us, that’s what’s taken such a long time, it’s hard to do that,” Mary said.

She is more than just a big sister to her two younger brothers, she’s also working part-time while going to school.

“I feel like I’ve had to grow up faster and focus on the goals like graduating,” she said.

Mary may be focused on graduating, but she said she tries to find a balance in life. She likes to try new things and she stands up for the things she believes in. Mary wants to be adopted but she says she’s more focused on finding the right home for her two younger brothers.

“I just want them to have, at least, a father figure or a mother figure, that can be there for them because they’ve never really had that,” she said.

When Mary talks about her two brothers she does it with pride.

“Isaiah is very smart, he knows a lot; I’d say he’s more quiet than Elias but he’s extremely smart when he tries.”

Isaiah said he loves school and would like to work on building robots. Isaiah is often perceived as shy, but he opens fairly easy with those who will engage with him. He also loves puzzles and magic, and he hopes to travel the world someday.

“I would like to go to China, they have all my favorite anime there,” he said.

The youngest of the three siblings is 10-year-old Elias, affectionally called a “love bug” by his older sister.

“Elias is a very loving, but also hyper person, he loves to hug and just play,” Mary said.

Like his older brother, Elias likes math and science, and video games. He also gets excited to tell stories to anyone who will listen. When asked about finding a forever family he wasn’t afraid to share his thoughts.

“I want to be a part of a mother and a father figure that will treat me nice, and also, I would want them to not focus on other stuff and just love me and my brother and my sister,” he said.

Elias and Isaiah expressed that support and quality time is what is most important to them when finding a forever family. For Mary, she’s looking for guidance as she approaches her adult years.

“I just care about my brothers being taken care of because I’ve learned to take care of myself,” she said.

Mary, Isaiah and Elias say they want to stay together and they’re not giving up hope that their family is out there waiting for them.
