SL County Council votes unanimously to ban mining in area canyons, including Parleys

SALT LAKE CITY — An attempt to open a quarry in Parleys Canyon resulted Tuesday in a Salt Lake County Council unanimous vote to ban mining in area canyons and foothills.

The quarry was opposed in writing by hundreds of citizens and the council’s decision was praised by Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson.

“Active measures are necessary to protect our canyon environment and preserve recreation opportunities. Today, Salt Lake County took an active measure to prohibit future mining in the Wasatch range,” Wilson said. She had previously released a statement opposing the quarry.

In a release from the county, it said it has received more than 1,000 public comments in favor of the amendment that prohibits mining.

A letter from the group attempting to operate the quarry said the ordinance was blatantly contrary to Utah code and would affect property values of many in the area.

“Salt Lake County understands the need to preserve our Wasatch range for residents to enjoy today and in the future. Further, mining impacts our water and air quality which are vital to the health of our community,” Wilson said.

Citizens and groups that opposed the quarry said it was a risk to water supply, economic growth, communities and ecosystems and was opposed online at saveparleys.org.
