SALT LAKE CITY — While much of the country celebrated the traditional beginning of summer this Memorial Day weekend the mountainous areas of northern Utah prepared for a blast of winter weather that could bring up to ten inches of snow to some areas.

A winter weather advisory from the National Weather Service took effect Sunday morning and will stay in play until 6 p.m. Monday.

The advisory said, “Mountain snow will lead to accumulating road snow on higher elevation passes, particularly during the overnight hours Sunday and Monday.”

The Weather Service there were at least three inches of snow in the western Uintas and two inches at Snowbird before noon. Other areas reported up to 1.5 inches of rain. That’s all welcome news for the parched and drought-stricken state.

The weather service warned drivers to prepare for snowy, slushy, and other wintery conditions in those areas.

The colder and wetter holiday weekend started with rain and thunderstorms in some areas over the north half of the state Saturday night. Most of the rain will fall Sunday complicating plans for some campers.

The high temperatures Sunday will be mostly in the low 60-degree range for northern Utah. Areas of southern Utah will see temperatures as high as 82-degrees according to KSL Meteorologist Kristen Van Dyke.

“If camping in the northern mountains of our state, plan for snow levels to drop into the 6,500′ range as cooler air moves in Sunday and Monday,” Van Dyke said.

The moisture in northern Utah is a stark contrast the red flag warning issued for the far southern part of the state.
