Saving water and money with xeriscaping

SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah – Recent record-breaking heat plus a drought and dry conditions make it tough to keep grass as well as certain trees and plants looking lively.
That in mind, xeriscaping is an alternative that will last throughout and beyond the heat stretch. It also takes significantly less water.
That’s according to Jason Laws, 2021 Utah Forest Council Arborist of the Year.
“We have kind of a crazy environment that changes,” Laws said.
Lately, conditions have been leaning heavily on the “hot and dry side.”
Add a drought on top, and he said xeriscaping may just be the right out of the box solution because unlike watering grass, a little water goes a longer way.
“Point source that water right where you need… you’re only watering about a third of what you were watering before,” Laws said.
Plus, he said there is lower maintenance involved not having to mow the lawn every week.
According to Perry Bratt, a founder of Stratton and Bratt Landscaping, xeriscaping also saves water from being wasted.
“We see people coming in for us to adjust sprinklers and we see a little leak. It may seem like a little leak in a mainline 5 gallons an hour… times 24 hours and times that by 200 days… that’s 24,000 gallons of water just from one five-gallon leak,” Bratt said.
They said it’s also important people investigate what kinds of plants and trees do well in Utah when it comes to climate.
That is, when looking at your own yard, they said it’s a good idea to decide what your end game is.
