UPDATE: Two more roofs have collapsed in Mountain Green, Utah, bringing the total to three in just a few days. No deaths have been reported form the failing roofs. Watch the latest on KSL5 news.

The original story is below.

MOUNTAIN GREEN, Utah — A garage roof attached to a home in Mountain Green, Utah, collapsed Thursday night due to heavy snow.

“I was watching the weather, and right then, I heard a boom,” said Mitchell Malan, the homeowner. “It came down so fast. I couldn’t get out of my recliner to run outside because it sounded like the whole house was going to cave in.”

The collapse happened at approximately 9:40 p.m. at the home on Sierra Drive in the Highlands subdivision. It’s the second roof collapse in the community this month.

Fortunately, Malan was able to escape his home without any injuries.

“I was thinking I better clean my kitchen because the whole fire department is about to be up here going through it,” he said laughing. “But then, I could smell gas, so I thought, well, I better get out of here.”

The collapse at Malan’s home cut a natural gas line.

Mountain Green firefighters arrived on scene and used snowshoes to assess the damage and control the leak. Unfortunately, the damage to Malan’s home is significant enough that he was forced to evacuate.

“This house is 55 years old and it’s never had a problem,” Malan said. ”But this winter, you know, broke all the records in Mountain Green and Utah.”

Mountain Green has received approximately 60 inches of snow in the last week and 20 inches in just the last 24 hours, according to Fire Chief Brian Brendel, who said several other homes in the area have sustained damage from the weight of that snow as well.

But despite the damage to his home, Malan said he’s still grateful for the snow.

“Praise God! We’re going to have plenty of water, we hope,” he said.

Malan said he’s lived in Mountain Green for more than 50 years and plans on repairing his home and rebuilding his garage — only, he has plans to make it bigger and better.

“I think it’s going to be OK. It’s going to be better than when we started when we’re finished,” he said.
