SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Health officials reported 2,899 more Utahn have tested positive for COVID-19, and 27  more have lost their lives because of the virus.

The state also reported an additional 2,289 cases that were backfilled, according to UDOH. Some were identified as early as June 2020 but were not included in case counts due to incomplete or unverified address information for the person who tested positive.

“Until now, UDOH has counted cases with a positive lab result and a verifiable Utah address,” the health department wrote in its daily report. “Beginning today, cases with incomplete or unverified address information will be counted as Utah cases, unless or until the case can be verified as not being a Utah resident.”

Nine of the 27 people whose deaths were reported Wednesday lost their lives prior to Dec. 23, 2020, according to the report.

Currently, there are 566 people hospitalized with coronavirus.

Testing

UDOH reports a total of 1,855,385 Utahns have been tested so far. That’s an increase of 12,727 people tested from yesterday.

Of those, a total of 314,817 have tested positive for COVID-19, which is 2,289 more cases since Tuesday’s report.

The rolling 7-day average for positive tests is 2,840 per day, and the rolling 7-day average for percent of positive laboratory tests is 27.8%.

Hospitalizations

Currently, 566 people are hospitalized with confirmed cases of COVID-19, and 194 of those are in intensive care units. Another 46 people are hospitalized with suspected cases of COVID-19.

Utah’s ICUs are 89.8% full. The ICU beds in the state’s referral centers are 92.6% full. Both numbers are above the state’s threshold for quality ICU care, which is 85% capacity.

Referral Centers are the 16 hospitals in Utah with the capability to provide the best care for patients with COVID-19. Because most patients are transferred to these facilities, their utilization is the best reflection of the true hospital capacity in Utah when looking at ICU beds.

Deaths

Health officials reported 27 more people have died as a direct result of the virus, and nine of those Utahns died prior to Dec. 23, 2020.
