If you have produce coming out your ears, you don’t have to spend a whole day canning to preserve it. Heather Smith and Candace Heward from Orson Gygi share how you can save your food a few minutes at a time on Studio 5. Food preservation made easy in just a few tips.
Tomatoes & Peaches
If you’ve suddenly found yourself with too many peaches or tomatoes, blanching them may be the best option to preserve them. This is a super easy process. It’s a heating and cooling process, similar to boiling an egg, that halts the ripening of the fruit. It also makes it so they won’t lose the texture of the fruit. It’s pretty simple. First lightly cut an ‘x’ into the bottom of either the tomato or the Peach. Then place the fruit into a pot with boiling water for about 30-60 seconds. Just long enough for the skin to start peeling at the x you made. Once it starts peeling, remove the fruit from the boiling water and place it in an ice bath. The ice bath prevents the fruit from cooking any more. Once it cools, You should be able to slip the skin right off and then store them in the fridge however you’d like.
Zucchini, Bell Peppers, Carrots, & Onions
Get out those food processors and shred those veggies! It’s quick and it’s easy and you can use those veggies all year long. Once you’ve placed them in a food processor, it’s as simple as portioning out how much you think you will be using at a time into resealable sandwich bags, and store them in the freezer. It’s super easy to add this to soups and sauces. Anything that you just want to add some more veggies into. You can also use it for baking. Just make sure that you let it defrost and let the extra moisture drip out. If you think you’ll be storing these veggies for more than a month, slip them into a secondary freezer bag to try and keep the veggies from getting freezer burned.
Apples
In order to peel apples and make them easy snacks for everyone in the house, you’ll just need an apple peeler. The incredible devices can peel, slice, and core your apples in one simple turning movement. The slices can easily be used for an apple pie. You can even bake the slices and make an amazing applesauce. These apple slices are easy to throw into the freezer and come in handy in the winter when you are looking for some easy ways to have some fresh fruit.
