Spring Planting Season Is Almost Here

Mar 28, 2019, 6:25 AM | Updated: Feb 7, 2023, 11:18 am

Warmer temperatures and spring fever are on a lot of people’s minds this week, and you may be thinking about getting out to do some yard work if you haven’t already.

Experts are already looking forward to spring planting season, with the last average frost in Salt Lake City less than a month away.

We caught up this week with our friends at J&J Nursery in Layton, who say they’ve already seen an uptick of people looking ahead to working in the garden and in their yards.

“A lot of them are just looking, testing, seeing what’s out there, seeing what we’re going to provide for them. So we like to have the whole setup and everything ready by mid-April,” says Andy Stevenson.

Take a look at three things you can do right now to get the yard ready:

  • Fertilize grass. Spring weeds are already sprouting, and experts say fertilizing early can help stop the spread.
  • Plant hearty vegetables. These can withstand some of the cold morning temperatures we’ll still see.
  • Be patient with flowers. Typically experts say wait until Mother’s Day to plant flowers unless you’re prepared to cover them on cold mornings.

“We have plenty of time. Let me babysit it here. Especially in the greenhouse stuff. Let me kind of babysit it here. And then do those flowers later on. Let’s get closer to mid-April or May. Trees, shrubs all that stuff…have at it right now. They love this weather.”

Stevenson adds J&J will see a huge uptick in customers in the week leading up to Mother’s Day, and any nursery can help you with which plants are right for your yard and garden.
