SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – At Discovery Gateway in Salt Lake City, there are literally hundreds of things to keeps kids busy. This week’s Wednesday’s Child, Dorian, was only interested in one thing.
When you’re 12 years old, a place like Discovery Gateway could keep you busy for hours.
“Do you guys have a service elevator?” Dorian asked an employee as soon as he walked through the door.
Dorian is a mechanically-minded boy, fascinated with finding out how things work.
The patient man accompanying him is Ray. He was Dorian’s fellow passenger between floors Wednesday, but for the last year or so he’s been much more.
“He’s got a big heart, and you know, he’s just a good kid all around,” said Ray.
Dorian is in foster care, and Ray has been providing his care.
“He’s got a fun-loving spirit to him. How can you be mad when you’re around Dorian and he’s like that?” Ray said. “It’s not hard to be happy when he’s happy – that’s for sure.”
Dorian is autistic and thrives when he gets one-on-one attention.
“Elevators,” Ray said. “That’s his thing and his passion. He loves to watch videos about them and how to fix them.”
Perhaps he’d do well with someone who likes avoiding the stairs.
“We couldn’t stray him away from those elevators,” Ray said with a laugh.
Even though Dorian has been through his own ups and downs, he’s ready for a family.
