SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Beginning Oct. 1, 2020, Utahns over 18 will need a gold star on their driver’s license in order to fly commercially or enter federal facilities.
The gold star is the last requirement the state of Utah has to meet to become fully compliant with federal Real ID standards.
TSA officials said U.S. passports will still be acceptable to use for identification at airports.
The Utah Driver License Division began issuing licenses with the gold star in February.
If your license expires before Oct. 1, 2020, officials said you will follow the normal renewal process.
For licenses expiring after Oct. 1, 2020, a Real ID-compliance license will be mailed to you with the same expiration date as your current license. State officials urged residents to check that their address is correct because state mail does not forward.
You can check on your license’s status here.
The Real ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005, enacting the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that the federal government set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver’s licenses.”
The @utahdld is issuing 7,000 gold star licenses a day and anticipates that they will finish with reproduction of gold star licenses by May of 2020. Get more info about gold star IDs here: https://t.co/PtFyNeomQM pic.twitter.com/szS8TTw0xa
