Four Members Of Grantsville Family Being Laid To Rest

GRANTSVILLE, Utah – The four family members who were tragically killed in their home Jan. 17 will be laid to rest in the Grantsville City Cemetery on Friday.

Hundreds gathered at a stake center for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to pay their respects to a mother, Alejandra, and three of her children, Alexis, Matthew and Milan Haynie.

Outside, yellow ribbons adorned trees and fences under gray skies. Four hearses were parked at the curb.

It was a week to the day after CJ Haynie, 16, allegedly shot his siblings and his parents over a span of hours. CJ’s father, Colin Haynie, was injured, but survived.

The family’s oldest son, Danny, was away at college the night of the shooting. He spoke during the funeral, saying, “CJ will always be my brother, and I will always love him.”

Brent and Nelda Eggett said they’ve known the Haynies for 10 years, and they see them at church every week.

“(I) sat on the stage and watched them as they came in and out of sacrament meeting and church,” Brent Eggett said. “Their son blessed the sacrament, you know, a week before all this happened. It’s just a total shock. A total shock.”

Colin Haynie also spoke at the funeral, saying he’s choosing to remember all the good things. He also made clear that the tragedy has not affected his faith.

“The tragic nature of this may cause some to think, ‘Why does God allow such things?'” he said. “I want you to know that this does not change my faith one bit. I know that God lives, and he loves his children.”

Private graveside services will be at the Grantsville City Cemetery.
