Wednesday’s Child: Tyson loves video games and asking questions

SANDY, Utah – At Nickelcade in Sandy, 16-year-old Tyson feels at home.

“Once at school, they called me Ty-Sonic, because I like Sonic,” he said.

Tyson loves video games. He loves the sights, the sounds, and the creative worlds they create.

“I’m basically a gamer, I want to be a YouTuber. I am going to start with gaming first and work up.”

Tyson finished the 10th grade, where his favorite class was graphic design. But he also likes being in the pool and outdoors.

“Tyson has voiced interest in swimming. He enjoys camping and being with his proctor family,” Jo Jensen said, Tyson’s case manager for The Department of Child and Family Services.

It was in March of 2020 when Tyson entered foster care. Jensen describes him as shy at first but says he opens up when you get him talking about his favorite subjects like food, video games, and family.

“Tyson is sentimental,” Jensen said. “He likes to release balloons every year on his grandfather’s birthday.”

Tyson is described as caring and funny. He’s always making jokes to make people laugh.

“Tyson cares about the feelings of others around him,” Jensen said.

Jensen says Tyson has some intellectual disabilities and asks many questions, so when looking for a permanent placement, he says Tyson needs a family that will be patient with him. Tyson agrees.

“People that are nice, don’t scream, you know?” he said.

Tyson says he wants to be loved by a family, and he wants to feel like he belongs with them.

“I hope that they like and care for me.”
