MAGNA, Utah — Seismologists with the University of Utah say a magnitude 2.5 earthquake that parts of the Salt Lake Valley Friday morning was another aftershock of March 2020’s magnitude 5.7 quake.

Friday’s afternoon, with an epicenter less than 1 mile north of Magna, was felt by more than 370 residents.

U of U seismologists said they have recorded over 2,700 aftershocks from the March 18, 2020, earthquake, including 41 of magnitude 3 and larger.

“In recent weeks there have been, on average, approximately two aftershocks per week large enough to locate, most of them smaller than magnitude 1.5,” seismologists said. “Aftershock activity is expected to continue for months, but with the rate continuing to decrease with time.”

Anyone who felt Friday’s aftershock was asked to report it on the U.S. Geological Survey’s website.
