Springville gas station offers community cheaper gas for the day

SPRINGVILLE, Utah — We’ve all been there lately. It seems with almost every fill up at the gas station, we’re seeing numbers we haven’t seen before.

“Hopefully it’ll stop sometime,” Crystal Barrera said with a laugh.

All the money she’s been spending for gas lately has her just about fuming.

“I was filling up with like ninety bucks, almost a hundred, and this is a small car, you know?” she said.

So, when Barrera saw on Facebook that her local Springville Sunpro Chevron gas station was offering a one-day nearly 50-cent a gallon discount on gas prices, she had to fill up.

“I was like, that’s great,” she said.

She wasn’t alone in thinking that way.

For a good part of Friday, cars were in a line that stretched nearly a block long for $4.59 a gallon.

“I just thought it was a fantastic idea,” Hilary Barksdale said. “Giving back to the community.”

Giving back is exactly why station manager Brian Johnson came up with the idea.

“I do think that’s the big message we want to get out to people is we do care about the community. We understand the financial strain. We hear every day about the rising cost of inflation, and we want to help,” Johnson said.

The station sold a normal full day’s worth of gas by 10 a.m. but had backup trucks ready to fill the tanks.

“We anticipated this,” Johnson said. “So, we had our fuel vendors ready with a truck and they’re ready with another truck.”

Johnson says it’ll cost him some money now, but he knows his loyal customers and future customers will appreciate it.

“I hope it will relieve the financial strain a little bit, even if just for a day,” Johnson said.

Barrera sure appreciated it.

She filled up at $77, which is better than the normal $95 she says she has been spending lately.

“Yeah, that’s 20-bucks savings right there,” Barrera said.

She’s happy for the savings but laughs at the thought she would be happy spending $4.59 a gallon.

“No, not at all,” she said with a laugh. “I mean, we’re living in crazy times, but we got to take advantage of everything we can for now.”
