UHP urges drivers not to stop on the left shoulder

DAVIS COUNTY, Utah — Officials with the Utah Highway Patrol are urging drivers to pull over to the right, not the left, when dealing with vehicle issues following an incident in Davis County.

According to a Wednesday morning Facebook post from UHP, troopers responded to a crash Tuesday “that all started with a flat tire.” The driver of a passenger vehicle noticed they had a flat and pulled to the left shoulder, partially blocking the HOV lane.

Troopers used that incident to remind travelers that they should make be making their way to the right shoulder and either exiting the freeway or finding a spot with a wide shoulder.

“If you are getting pulled over, having vehicle issues, or whatever reason it maybe to stop on the freeway, never stop on the left,” the post stated.

UHP officials said it’s also a good reminder to scan ahead and follow the move over law for emergency vehicles, EMS, tow drivers, and the Utah Department of Transportation.

“Get in good practice to move over for any vehicle on the shoulder.”

UHP went on to share some 2022 statistics involving people dying after being struck by a vehicle in the United States:
