Tips to keep your child safe this Halloween

SALT LAKE CITY — Halloween is just around the corner, which means streets will soon be filled with trick-or-treaters whose focus on candy may distract them from watching cars.
“We know there are a lot of kids out walking. It’s really important that drivers are extra cautious, extra aware,” said Jessica Strong, community health director of Intermountain’s Primary Children’s Hospital.
Strong said kids are two times more likely to be hit by a car on Halloween, so to keep kids safe, she recommends the steps to Spot the Tot:
- Walk all the way around your car before you back up
- Eliminate distractions
- Listen and be aware
She added that rolling down your windows, turning your radio off, and backing up really slowly are all great tools.
Not only do drivers have to be extra cautious on Halloween, parents and trick or treaters do, too.
Strong recommends that any child under 12 should be with an adult.
“Kids should also wear glow sticks or flashlights or wear costumes with reflective lights,” Strong said.
Strong said while they emphasize the importance of Spot The Tot around Halloween, “These are good practices to do year-round to make sure kids stay safe.”
