SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — We are in the final shopping days until Christmas, and many of us are finding ourselves out looking for those last-minute gifts. Just remember – distracted holiday shoppers can be the perfect target for thieves.
As you run those last minute shopping errands, take a few moments to think about your personal and financial safety.
If possible, park close to your destination in a well-lit area. Look around as you park for anything suspicious.
Lock your car, and never leave anything of value visible. Those shopping bags and electronics should go in your trunk.
As you walk around the store, keep your purse or bag close. It’s best to wear it in front of your body. Never leave a purse in the shopping cart. And your wallet or cash should go in a front pocket.
It’s easy to get distracted as you shop, but it’s important to stay alert to what is going on around you. Be aware of exits in case of an emergency.
As you leave the store – don’t carry more than you can handle. If you are overwhelmed with bags, it makes you an easier target for thieves. Don’t hesitate to ask an employee to help you out to your car.
Avoid distractions such as phone calls or texts as you walk to your car. Be present and aware of your surroundings.
It’s a good idea to have your keys in hand before you leave the store so you don’t have to search for them in the parking lot. Having them in hand also lets you use the panic button in an emergency.
Walk straight to your vehicle. Don’t linger in the parking lot. Load your packages, get in, lock the doors, buckle up and leave.
