It’s the most underrated knife in your kitchen drawer or your knife block. Your serrated knife probably doesn’t see the sun as much as your others. Heather Smith and Candace Heward show you how this less frequently used knife shines by cutting three things better than any other knife.
Loaf of Bread
This one is a no brainer. These long blades are not only perfect for cutting perfect bread slices, but they are also great for splitting a loaf of bread lengthwise to create that perfect giant sandwich! Speaking of sandwiches, serrated blades also make cutting that giant sandwich in half a piece of cake.
Tomatoes
Skip using your classic chef’s knife when you are slicing up those tomatoes. Your chef’s knife might be perfectly sharp, but it’s likely you aren’t going to get as clean or as thin of a slice as you would with a serrated blade.
Pineapple
With its tough skin and prickly leaves, a pineapple can be a little difficult to handle. But try using a serrated blade next time you have a pineapple to slice off the skin and leaves. You can also use the same knife to slice out the core and make some beautiful pineapple rings.
What Should I Look for in a Serrated Knife?
When you are looking for a serrated knife to add to your kitchen, you’ll want to be on the lookout for a few things:
- A knife with fewer deep serrations. The more spread out and sharper the serrations, the better.
- A thinner angle of the blade
- The handle should have a good grip that is comfortable to hold
- And you will probably want a blade that is about 8″ – 10″ in length.
