SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The new Salt Lake City International Airport is a marvel, but there’s still the business of taking down sections of the old facility.
Inside the old Terminal 1, things were almost unrecognizable as the demolition progresses.
Officials said crews will be finishing the whole project with Phase 2 ending early.
“The contractor is recycling a whole lot of material,” said Airport Redevelopment Program Director Mike Wilson. “As they demolish the building, they sort out all of the bars and the things that can be recycled. So everything that can be reused is reused.”
The pandemic has actually helped speed up the process, authorities said. The program is saving approximately $300 million during the construction because crews have been able to move so quickly with fewer travelers flying.
Terminal 1 is expected to be fully torn down by early 2021.
