TOOELE, Utah – A teenager charged in the murders of his mother and three of his siblings appeared in court Tuesday morning.
Colin Jeffery Haynie, 16, of Grantsville, is accused of shooting his family members one by one inside their home on Jan. 17.
Haynie arrived at Third District Court just before 10a.m. for a scheduling conference, where the court officially appointed Haynie his attorney, Rick Van Wagoner.
The shackled teen appeared before Judge Diana Gibson. He remained silent throughout the proceedings.
Haynie’s father, Colin Haynie, who was injured during the shooting, was also present in the courtroom.
Colin Jeffery Haynie is charged with four counts of aggravated murder, one count of attempted murder, and five counts of discharge of a firearm.
Van Wagoner said he plans to begin the process of discovery and make requests from the state.
Colin Jeffery Haynie has not cooperated with investigators, and motivation for his alleged involvement is unclear.
“We’re hoping that as we process more evidence, we’ll get a better idea as we go through some of the electronic devices,” said Tooele County Attorney Scott Broadhead. “Maybe some of those motives will unveil themselves, but at this point we don’t know.”
Van Wagoner said Colin Haynie reached out to him to represent his son. He said it’s his understanding Colin Haynie is appreciative and was hopeful Van Wagoner would be appointed.
Colin Jeffery Haynie’s next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 24.
