Davis County students are welcomed back to a new school year

CENTERVILLE, Utah — Students in the Davis School District took on their first day of school Monday.

Centerville Elementary students went back to school in style by walking the red carpet with a sea of streamers waved by family and community members.

The sixth-grade student council members offered up words of wisdom to younger students going into the classroom, including:

“Stay in school. Respect your teachers. Have a positive energy during school.”

Ioelu Memea, a parent, said, “They’re excited to be back in school. We’re excited to be back in school.”

Another parent said it’s a big year for their student.

Students at Centerville Elementary were also greeted by a new principal, Leslie Bertram.

She said the foundation for students is being built now and will carry their students through the school year.

“It’s important for every student to feel completely part of things and totally involved, which aligns with how we already feel. It fits into the Centerville community that that’s what we’re going to do,” Bertram said.

This year, the school district welcomes new leadership, including a superintendent and assistant superintendent.

The district is aiming to go back to the basics of learning and build on community, along with building relationships among staff, parents, and students in the community.

The Memea family said they appreciate this greatly coming from out of state.

“I think the involvement of everybody, the community, that’s a big plus for us,” Memea said.

“We’re here to take care of every student. No matter where they come from, what country, what their background is,” Bertram said.
